European Commission Approves State Funding for Digitalization of #Stuttgart Railway Junction

The European Commission (EC) has approved state support of € 200 million for the creation of a fully digital railway junction in Stuttgart, Germany. This is stated in the message of the EC.

The funds will finance two main tasks of equipping rolling stock. The first provides for the installation of on-board equipment of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), the second – the train automation system (ATO). Their use will increase the efficiency and safety of traffic on the regional network.

“These two measures to support the rail freight transport sector will provide increased government support to further stimulate the movement of freight traffic from road to rail. Government support will be expressed in the form of direct grants to owners or operators of rail transport, which will be used to upgrade existing equipment. This measure will be in effect until 2025, ”the EC reported.

The European Commission found that the German project is beneficial for the environment and transport development. The supreme executive body of the European Union also noted that the subsidies will have a stimulating effect, since the owners and operators of rolling stock will not have to carry out the necessary renovation entirely at their own expense.

The German state-owned railway operator Deutsche Bahn and the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) had previously announced a project to create a fully digital railway junction in Stuttgart last August. By 2025, the company will equip all stations and about 100 km of tracks in Stuttgart with digital signaling, as well as rail traffic control and train automation.

The Stuttgart Initiative is one of three pilot projects in the Starter Pack for the digitalization of railways in Germany. The other two will be deployed on the Cologne-Rhine-Main high-speed line and the Scandinavia-Mediterranean transport corridor of the TEN-T trans-European network. Their implementation is expected to increase the capacity and efficiency of the infrastructure.(Gudok.ru)
