The volume of public investment in the project will be up to 15 million euros
Chemnitz University of Technology and German state railway operator Deutsche Bahn will create a platform for testing digitalization and automation technologies in railway infrastructure. This was announced in a press release from the university, published on 4 August.
The project envisages the construction of towers with repeaters of the fifth generation (5G) mobile communication network along the Annaberg-Buchholz-Schwarzenberg railway line, the modernization of existing buildings on the route to create laboratories, as well as the purchase of traction rolling stock and its re-equipment for testing the latest technologies. For these purposes, the German government will allocate funds in the amount of up to 15 million euros.
German Federal Minister of Transport and Digital Infrastructure Andreas Scheuer emphasized the intention to actively attract passengers to rail transport. “This can only be achieved through greater digitalization – on the train and on the railway itself. We want to research and test these technologies in the Ore Mountains: from digital control and safety systems to measures to improve signal reception, ”he said.
Deutsche Bahn’s Infrastructure Director Ronald Pofalla noted that Europe’s first digital signaling terminal has been operating in Annaberg-Buchholz since 2018. “We are currently expanding the test area and are working very intensively to use the 5G mobile standard for rail transport,” he concluded.
