#Ferrograin will Remove 1 million tons of CO2 from the Atmosphere, says Minister

Railroad should absorb 70% of the cargo transported by the BR-163

Once completed, Ferrogrão , a railroad whose project plans to interconnect Mato Grosso and Pará, should remove 1 million tons of carbon from the atmosphere, according to a calculation by the federal government mentioned by the minister of infrastructure, Tarcísio Gomes de Freitas, when the auction for the BR-163 concession was held  , on the stretch that connects Sinop (MT) to Miritituba (PA).

The highway, which also connects the two states, was granted for 10 years – a period that the government believes is necessary to inaugurate the railway.

How not to believe in a railroad that will serve a state that, in 2030, will be producing 120 million tons of grain or even more? The result of the increase in productivity and the planted area and that without cutting down any trees”, said Tarcísio.

The project had its elaboration suspended by the Federal Supreme Court (STF) for foreseeing the suppression of 862 hectares of the Jamanxim National Park, in Pará. The disaffection was made by Provisional Measure (MP), which was considered unconstitutional by the supreme.

“We have already provided clarifications, we made a request for reconsideration in the Supreme Court, bringing our arguments,” explained the minister.

According to him, the STF’s understanding comes after the issuing of the Provisional Measure and, although it dismantles 860 hectares of park, it has added 50,000 hectares of the Tapajós River’s environmental preservation area.

“The fact is that we had a 460 hectare suppression with all the environmental benefits that Ferrogrão will bring”, said the minister, when classifying the railway “as a great green barrier”.

“It is a railway that we are structuring with major global environmental entities so that we have the state of the art in terms of sustainability, a railway capable of obtaining the green seal, and this process is underway”, revealed Tarcísio.
