India Plans 10 more Bullet Trains -Report


Railways have sent a proposal to the Cabinet seeking approval. The proposal asks permission to conduct a feasibility study and it also includes a detailed project report for 10 possible bullet train corridors.

It seems as if the government is planning to add 10 more bullet trains in the railway network. Railways has reportedly prepared a mega expansion plan which includes 10 bullet train corridors with the total length of about 6,000 Km. The expansion plan also includes doubling the freight capacity in coming years, reported Times of India.

The national daily report claimed that Railways has already sent a proposal to the Cabinet seeking approval. The proposal reportedly asks permission to conduct a feasibility study. It also includes a detailed project report (DPR) for 10 possible bullet train corridors across thee country. 

A source cites in the report said that the plan preliminary right now and some proposed segments are Chennai-Bengaluru, Patna-Kolkata, Delhi-Amritsar, Nagpur-Mumbai, Chennai-Mysuru etc. As per the sources, an estimated investment of Rs 10 lakh crore is needed over a period of 10 years.

The sources further told ToI that Railways’ main focus right now, is to add 17,000 km to the current 1.2 lakh Km rail network. This will require an investment of Rs 5 lakh crore or more. The expansion plan includes rail track trebling along the Golden Quadrilateral and other major lines in an effort to reduce traffic on roads.

Worth mentioning here is that currently, the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) is implementing India’s first high-speed train (bullet train) corridor project between Ahmedabad and Mumbai. The total length of this proposed corridor is about 508.17 Km and has been proposed with 12 Stations i.e. Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand/Nadia, Ahmedabad and Sabarmati.
