On 23 February, the European Commission (EC) put forward a proposal to create ten new European partnerships for the Horizon Europe program, including Europe’s Rail initiative, to replace the Shift2Rail railway innovation program. This was reported in a press release from the EC.

European partnerships are proposed to be created within the framework of the Horizon Europe program for 2021–2027. Their goal will be to accelerate the development and implementation of innovative solutions in various sectors by mobilizing public and private resources.

All ten partnerships are financed by the European Union in the amount of almost 10 billion euros. It is also planned that government and industry partners of the projects will provide at least an equivalent amount of investment.

Commenting on the proposal to create a joint venture Europe’s Rail, the EC notes that this partnership will accelerate the development and implementation of innovative technologies, especially in the field of digitalization and automation, to radically transform the railway system and achieve the goals of the European “green” course. “By increasing its competitiveness, it will support European technological leadership in the field of railway transport,” the European Commission concluded.

EC Transport Commissioner Adina Valean stressed that partnerships will play a central role in enabling the digital and green technology transition in the transport industry.

The proposal to approve partnerships will be adopted by the Council of the EU after consultation with the European Parliament and the Economic and Social Committee.
