Train fusion: #Alstom and #Bombardier fear for their Factories in #Germany

EU Commissioner Vestager has set conditions for Alstom’s takeover of Bombardier that could hit the Hennigsdorf and Salzgitter locations hard. They would have to be sold.

Alstom and Bombardier may have to sell two large locations in Germany to merge in rail technology.

Around 4,000 employees would be affected. Alstom develops and manufactures metros, regional trains and subways in Salzgitter, Bombardier in Hennigsdorf near Berlin. However, because the two companies dominate the European market on such trains, the EU Competition Commission should announce tough conditions for approval in just a few days.

The French railway technology group Alstom officially announced the takeover of its competitor Bombardier Transportation in Brussels on June 11th. This is the deadline for a decision by the Commission headed by Margrethe Vestager.

Alstom boss Henry Poupart-Lafarge hopes to get Vestager’s approval of his plan “in one step” without a time-consuming in-depth examination, as he said in an interview a few weeks ago.

The Frenchman would then have to make decisions in July about which plants or product lines will be sold in order to meet the conditions of the competition authorities in Brussels. The deal would be over by the end of July.
