#UIC to Coordinate #5G Railway Radio Communication Demo System

The International Union of Railways (UIC) will coordinate the work on the 5GRAIL project, which is funded by the European Union under the Horizon 2020 program.

The project with a budget of 13 million euros is designed for 30 months and provides for the validation of the first specifications for the new generation FRMCS railway radio communication system through the development and testing of prototypes on-board and floor devices.

The demos should be based on version 1 of the UIC functional and system requirements for FRMCS and specification 16 of the 3GPP consortium, which is developing the 5G mobile radio standard. The FRMCS system is to replace the GSM-R railway radio network in Europe.

The 5GRAIL project is being implemented by a consortium with the participation of the European Association of the Railroad Industry (UNIFE), leading European railways and railway infrastructure operators, European industry companies (Nokia, Kontron, Alstom, Thales, Siemens, CAF and Teleste), as well as research centers and universities.

Co-operation is envisaged with the European Railways Agency (ERA) and the S2R joint venture promoting the Shift2Rail initiative, which are also developing a new communications system for railways.

Prototypes of FRMCS devices will be tested in laboratories and in real conditions on railway lines, including cross-border ones.

The goal of UIC is to release in 2025 the first edition of the FRMCS, based on specification 17 of the 3GPP consortium. This will allow the railways to start implementing pilot projects for the deployment of a new radio communication system (computer graphics, source: Nokia).
