In response to advocacy for the reform of Nigerian railways, President Muhammadu Buhari has constituted a presidential committee under the Chairmanship of Senator Gbemisola Ruqayat Saraki, the Minister of State for Transportation.
The committee’s terms of reference include studying and making recommendations for the unbundling of the Nigerian Railway Corporation into four separate companies namely operations, infrastructures management, regulations and marketing.
Senator Gbemisola Saraki has been a tested infrastructure and logistic professional long before her appointment as a minister. Her chairmanship of the committee came in response to advocacy by stakeholders on the immediate need to unbundle the NRC into specialised companies.
Efforts to break the NRC into various segments had failed in the past and the current approach by the Muhammadu Buhari administration is adjudged by professionals as a smart move to fast track the reform process.
