#Israel Plans Rail Corridor to Persian Gulf

Israel eyes rail link to the Persian Gulf. Gulf Cooperation Council appears receptive to the idea.

Israel’s National Infrastructure Committee has supported an estimated US $ 4.5 billion project to extend the Haifa-Beit She’an railroad to the Jordanian border, which could be the first step towards creating a Gulf to Gulf rail corridor between the Haifa and Persian Gulfs.

On the 15 km section from Beit She’an to the border crossing on the border with Jordan, several tunnels and a bridge are to be built, as well as a change in the road map .

It is planned that the new line will run 3 pairs of freight trains per day, which will significantly reduce the load on the roads.

In view of the construction of a regional network of Gulf Railway by the states, members of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Persian Gulf (GCC), this section acquires strategic importance.

According to the leadership of the Israeli Ministry of Transport, in addition to the commercial component, the project has long-term prospects.

With its appearance, a land bridge will be formed between Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Railway transport will create serious competition for road and sea transport.

Today, in order to travel from the Persian Gulf to the Mediterranean, ships need to circumnavigate the Arabian Peninsula and pass through the Suez Canal (photo: Israel railways).
