The first 24 Oriole city electric trains were handed over to Moscow central diameters in early July. The new generation train, the space of which is adapted to the needs of passengers, was created by the Russian manufacturer – Transmashholding.
In an interview with Izvestia, the deputy general director of Transmashholding JSC for the development of passenger transport Alexander Loshmanov spoke about how public transport will change with the advent of new trains.
What are the requirements for new generation city trains, what did you focus on when creating the Orioles?
Transmasholding DMD-In Russia, it was necessary to create a train that best meets the passenger’s needs in terms of comfort, aesthetics, safety, and ecology. The transport industry, like everyone else, adapts to the enormous pace that technology development is gaining. A modern city electric train is more than just a way to get from point A to point B. This is a special space in which everything is thought out to the smallest detail. It should be comfortable for absolutely all passengers: those traveling to work, and young mothers with children, and passengers with limited mobility, and cyclists. It is also important to save the passenger maximum time and give the opportunity to spend time on the journey the way he wants.
Already at the end of this year, the Oriole trains, in a new modification, will go along the first routes of Moscow central diameters. Since the beginning of the year, they have been used in test mode in several directions of the Moscow Railway. Oriole receives extremely positive reviews. The research center conducted a survey among train passengers: 98% of respondents noted a smooth ride and noise isolation, 99% – the lack of vestibules and adaptive lighting (in the morning it is more “cold”, invigorating, in the evening “warm”, relaxing), 97% respond positively about the interior. When designing it, we took into account not only physical, but also psychological comfort, so we took the so-called bionic design as a basis: colors and materials, the bends of the interior lines were borrowed from nature.
How is the space in passenger compartments organized?
Speaking about the new version of the Orioles, the day before we delivered 24 trains for the WDC under the first contract with the operator of the Central PPK project, here we changed the arrangement of seats, placing them according to the 2 + 2 scheme in two rows opposite each other. Studies have shown that this is the most optimal arrangement of seats for public transport.
The seats are designed for one person, some of them are transformed: if they are free, they can be folded to make room. This is a modular principle in action – the space can be adapted to the needs of passengers.
In the new “Oriole” it is convenient to ride while standing and move from one carriage to another. The designers added a lot of different handrails, some of them made with a “warm” coating. Handrails were also installed in the inter-car crossings (they refused from the vestibules in the Oriole) – the whole train can be passed through, as in the new Moscow trains in the metro. Due to the wide doorways (the doors themselves open after pressing a button), the car itself can be entered without waiting for the remaining passengers to leave – this saves time, the landing becomes more comfortable. Oriole trains for WDCs will automatically count passengers
For the convenience of people with limited mobility and passengers with children, the area of toilets has been increased in new cars. They also appeared sensory supply of water and soap, electric hand dryers, changing tables for babies. All cars have climate control and an air disinfectant, which is especially true during the cold and flu season.
In the “Oriole” it will be comfortable to ride with a bicycle (in head carriages, four bike mounts), and with bulky luggage – for this, special racks are provided. Clothes can be hung on hooks, and small bags placed on shelves above the seats. Another detail that makes the trip much more comfortable is information boards, which will show news, weather forecasts and the route.
What about Wi-Fi, will it be convenient to stay in touch on the go?
Of course, getting on a train, a person will be able to continue to work, communicate in the usual mode – we also took care of this. Wi-Fi access points are installed in the Oriole, each car has 16 dual USB sockets for recharging electronic devices.
The new Orioles, as you noted, are already being used on several routes. What are the first results?
We believe that trains show themselves worthy. Of course, any complex equipment that is just getting into operation inevitably goes through the running-in period. This is faced by all manufacturers in the world. It is through this stage that the “Oriole” is now passing – trains begin to work in conditions of real infrastructure, in a variety of modes and conditions. Of course, it is impossible to foresee all possible situations during its creation. Therefore, from time to time, faced with a new situation for themselves, trains go into a protected mode, insuring their equipment and passengers. Each such case is carefully analyzed; as a result, necessary adjustments are made to the settings of the units and assemblies.
Is it possible to say that?
Experts in the field of transport note that the Oriole for the Russian car building is a real breakthrough, and not only in terms of comfort and service. The design of the train used about 90% of domestic materials and components, despite the fact that the project is based on many years of experience in both domestic and foreign car building. The appearance and interior of the train were developed in collaboration with a leading European design bureau.
As a result, the train fully meets international requirements for comfort and safety and is at the same time fully adapted to Russian realities – large passenger flow and difficult weather conditions. The train was twice awarded the Platinum Quality Mark – this is the highest award of the All-Russian Brand (III millennium) contest. 21st Century Quality Mark. ” At the same time, we are constantly improving the design of the train: today we are working on the next modification of the “Orioles” for the WDC – of seven cars. We will introduce even more technologies and services into it.
The Oriole is now universally compared with the Swallows, which run along the MCC, however, it should be noted that these are two different trains that were created at different times and solve different problems. The Siemens train was developed back in the 1990s, and also for suburban transport in Europe.
“Oriole” is a modern urban-type electric train, specially designed to operate in a clock mode, that is, trips with frequent stops over short distances. This implies a constant change in the speed mode, and technical capabilities for quick acceleration and smooth, but clear (instantaneous) braking are just important here, a digital control system, and a driver’s alertness control system.
In addition, as I have already mentioned, the doorways in the Oriole are wider – 140 cm instead of 125 cm, and the interior space itself is on average 7% larger than its counterparts. Modular salons – this means that the chairs can be easily removed if necessary, replacing additional bike mounts, vending machines. All these factors are important for the operation of the train in the city where there is a large passenger flow.
According to the requirements of “Central PPC”, in the “Oriole” it is possible, depending on the needs and route, to change the number of cars. It is also worth noting that the energy consumption of a train is 30% less than that of models of previous generations. At the same time, the cost of full service and passenger space compared to the “Swallow” is lower – 1.6 times and 1.5 times, respectively.
How do you assess the prospects for the development of urban passenger transport in Moscow? What will give the city the emergence of WDC?
Today, the rapidly growing agglomeration of Moscow faces a number of challenges, the main of which are busy roads, the high and often exhausting pace of life of citizens, as well as an ever-increasing environmental burden.
The development of urban passenger transport also helps to overcome them; the most universal option is rail transportation. They immediately solve at least two problems: reduce the fatigue of citizens from eternal stay on the road and the burden on the environment.
Against this background, you can be sure that the railway infrastructure of Moscow is waiting for rapid development. This trend is confirmed by the launch of the WDC project, which was based on the desire to create a fundamentally new type of public transport based on the usual railway routes, which, in essence, will combine the format of the metro and suburban electric train
