Reconstruction of the line between Mozambique and Malawi

Reconstruction of the 44 km Dona Ana – Vila Nova de Fronteira border line has begun to improve communications between two countries in Southeast Africa: Mozambique and Malawi.

The inauguration ceremony of construction work took place on May 29, 2021 in the Mutarara district of Tete province (Mozambique).Traffic on the Mozambique section of the line ceased in 1986 due to fighting in the area.

Funding for the $ 30 million reconstruction project will be provided by the Portos e Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique (CFM) Administration, which operates Mozambique’s railway network and associated ports.

The implementation of the project will increase the train speed from 30 to 60 km / h, and the axle load from 16.5 to 20.5 tons.

Both passenger and freight trains will run between the port of Beira in Mozambique and the cities of the Republic of Malawi, which does not have landlocked.

Malawi annually imports and exports about 48 million tons of cargo through Mozambique. The restored line is designed to contribute to the social and economic development of both countries.

More than 150 new jobs will be created during the reconstruction process, mainly local workers are planned to be employed.

Also in Mozambique, it is planned to open a vocational school for training personnel for the railway (photo: CFM).
