Russian Passenger Firm Sells Tickets Using Artificial Intelligence

The company equipped the ticket offices with hardware and software systems based on artificial intelligence for the automatic input of passenger data into ticket forms

Gudok.ru: The Federal Passenger Company has equipped long-distance ticket offices with artificial intelligence-based hardware and software systems for automatically entering passenger data into ticket forms. 

This will significantly reduce the time it takes to issue tickets at the box office and minimize the influence of the human factor on the correctness of filling out the forms, the press service of the company said.

“In total, within the framework of the purchase, the company received 835 devices,” the message says. 

A domestic development based on artificial intelligence (AI) is a video scanner that connects to a computer via a keyboard connector without the need to install additional software. It is completely autonomous, equipped with a video camera and built-in computing module for processing documents without connecting to external devices. This ensures the safety and complete protection of passengers’ personal data, since they are not stored in a computer or cloud storage.

When issuing tickets, the cashier just needs to attach the document to the scanner and the passenger data will automatically appear on the travel document blank. The device is capable of recognizing in a few seconds the data not only of a Russian internal passport, but also of a foreign passport, birth certificate, as well as passports of more than 200 countries of the world. This is especially effective when issuing tickets to citizens of other countries, since depending on the country of issue of the passport and the specifics of the document itself, the fields indicating the name and surname can be reversed and contain several words. 

Previously, with manual input, the operator needed additional time to determine the correct sequence of details in a foreign passport and the correctness of their input. Now, regardless of the type of passport, the entire data entry process takes no more than 5 seconds.

The developer of the hardware and software complex is RuDevices. The Russian company Smart Engines acted as the supplier of AI technology for retrieving passport data. The release of a batch of scanners was carried out by the manufacturer of radio electronics SPC Spectr.

“In accordance with the requirements of the legislation, the transportation operator must request the client’s passport data. Filling out the travel document form manually requires additional time and does not exclude errors. The system of automatic scanning and data entry, which has now been installed at points of sale at train stations, allows not only to reduce the burden on employees selling tickets, but also to make the process of buying tickets at the ticket offices faster and more convenient for our passengers, ”said the first deputy Valery Veremeyev, General Director of Federal Passenger Company JSC.

“According to our estimates, the implementation of the hardware and software complex will reduce the operator’s labor costs for processing documents up to 44 hours per month. This is especially true for those industries where servicing takes place in a continuous flow of customers, and some related activities are absent, when the operator’s productivity during manual input decreases during the working day, ”notes Alexey Mistyukov, co-founder of RuDevices.
