JSC “Russian Railways Logistics” (RZDL) and the Japanese transport and logistics operator Nissin Corporation signed a memorandum of cooperation in the development of rail transport  Japan – Russia – Europe . The companies agreed to jointly develop new logistics services in order to increase the transit cargo flow along the Trans-Siberian Railway. Rail transit will enable Japanese shippers to shorten delivery times compared to sea, ensuring that goods are safe in transit.

In accordance with the memorandum, Russian Railways and the Japanese operator are planning to increase the volume of traffic on the Trans-Siberian Railway, to develop new logistics products, including for the delivery of goods ordered via the Internet by European customers from the Land of the Rising Sun. “Today, in the unstable situation with sea shipments, the railway can offer Japanese shippers stability and reliability of cargo delivery,” explained Junichiro Watanabe, Senior Managing Director of Nissin Corporation.

Recall that from the 1970s to the 1980s, the Trans-Siberian Railway was actively used for freight traffic from Japan to Europe, but after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, their volume decreased sharply. Since last year, this direction has begun to develop again. In November 2020, the Russian Railways holding and the FESCO Transport Group dispatched the first full-set container train with cargo from Japan to Europe via the Trans-Siberian Railway. Following, in February 2021, the Danish company Maersk, together with JSC Russian Railways and LLC Modul, dispatched its first full-piece container train with Japanese cargo. The train proceeded from the station Nakhodka-Vostochnaya to the port of St. Petersburg, from where the products were transported by sea to the British port of Filixstow.

“The Japanese transportation market is always very expensive goods, for which safety is the most important factor in transportation. Today, when transported in containers, Russian Railways provides a 100% guarantee of the safety of cargo, which cannot be said about sea transportation, ”says Alexei Bezborodov, General Director of the InfraNews research agency.

It should be noted that strengthening relations with Japan is one of the main priorities of Russian Railways today. To this end, the company opened its representative office in Tokyo in the spring. His competence includes, among other things, informing about transport and logistics services, strengthening scientific, technical, innovative and educational cooperation in the field of railway transport.

During the signing of the document, Dmitry Murev, General Director of JSC Russian Railways Logistics, noted that the agreement with Japanese colleagues is an important step towards strengthening cooperation in the development of railway transportation along the Trans-Siberian Railway.

During the Russia-Japan business dialogue held in June at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, First Deputy Director General of Russian Railways Sergei Pavlov said that container traffic has become the main driver of growth in transit cargo traffic to Japan. “Transit container traffic in communication with Japan increased by 88% (in the first five months of 2021 compared to the same period in 2020. – Ed.)”, – he noted.(
