Russia,South Korea Mulls Integration of Trans-Siberian Railway and Korean Peninsula The speaker of the South Korean parliament at the trading session of the parliamentary “twenty” also announced the need to draw a railway to South Korea through North Korea

Representatives of Russia and South Korea discussed on the sidelines of the parliamentary G20 in Tokyo the integration of the Trans-Siberian Railway and the railways of the two Koreas. This was reported by TASS agency with reference to the First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma of the Russian Federation Alexander Zhukov.

The delegation of South Korean parliamentarians was led by Speaker of the National Assembly, Moon Hee-san.

Alexander Zhukov also noted that the speaker of the South Korean parliament “even during his speech at the trading session (of the parliamentary“ twenty, ”ed.) Said that it was necessary to draw a railway to South Korea through North Korea, which would connect the countries with Eurasia.”

The project for connecting the Trans-Korean Railway and the Trans-Siberian Railway is being developed by specialists from Russia, the Republic of Korea and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. Its implementation will allow to direct cargo from sea lines to the railway and thereby reduce the transit period from the Republic of Korea to Europe to 10 days. 

In June 2018, Oleg Belozerov, Director General of Russian Railways OJSC, and O Young Sik, President of Korean Railways Corporation (Korail), entered into a memorandum of understanding on cooperation issues, which in particular provides for the elaboration of railway transportation tasks in the Republic of Korea message – Russia – Europe. 

The cost of connecting the Trans-Siberian Railway and the Trans-Korean Railway may be$ 3-4 billion. Project implementation period – 3-5 years. The railway section Khasan (Primorye) – Rajin (DPRK) currently exists , but traffic is not carried out on it. On December 26, 2018, a solemn ceremony was held in honor of the start of work on connecting and modernizing the railways and highways of South and North Korea. 

In April 2019, Russian President Vladimir Putin at a meeting with the head of North Korea, Kim Jong-un, discussed the railway integration project and complained that it had been stopped due to the position of the Republic of Korea.
