Sudan Railways Corporation and Maersk Sign MOU for Container Transport

(SUNA) – The Sudan Railways Authority signed a memorandum of understanding with Maersk Shipping Company, in the buildings of the Ministry of Transport, for the purpose of transporting containers from Port Sudan port to free zones and customs yards inside Sudan that are connected by railways,

in the presence of Muhammad Bashar Adam, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Transport and Railway Operations Representatives.Signed on behalf of the Railway Authority by its Director General, Engineer Walid Mahmoud, and on behalf of Maersk, Mr. Karl Lorenz, Regional Director for East Africa.

Engineer Walid Mahmoud stated that this step is important to raise the contribution to the incoming and outgoing commercial transport, and that the railways are making appreciable efforts in rehabilitating the dry port lines, and that work has exceeded more than 70% in the Soba Dry Port and the Southern Port of Port Sudan.

It is worth noting that the company transports more than 40% of the containers inside Sudan, and its activities in Africa depend on rail transport due to its low cost and safety
