Sweden assessed the project for the construction of a high-speed rail linking the capital with Gothenburg and Malmö

In June 2020, the Swedish government commissioned the national transport administration Trafikverket to analyze a project for the phased construction of a Y-shaped high-speed line linking Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö.

The mega-project, with a budget of SEK 205 billion (US $ 24 billion), includes ongoing East Link projects as well as the Gothenburg-Boros and Hesleholm-Lund sections.

However, the study showed that the real cost of construction will be 295 ± 50 billion kroons.The East Link branch between Järna and Linköping stations is the first of three new high-speed trunk lines in the south of the country.

It will lay 160 km of new double-track tracks, 200 bridges, 20 km of tunnels and five stations. It is planned to put the line into operation in 2035.In the Boros area, the track and contact network is being reconstructed, new centralization and telecontrol systems are being built.

On the Hesleholm – Lund section, a new 70 km double-track line is to be built to handle high-speed and regional trains. The start of construction is scheduled for 2027 – 2029.Along with the analysis of the main proposal,

Trafikverket has developed four additional options providing for the construction of a track on a ballast base with a maximum train speed of 300 km / h, while the basic proposal envisages laying a ballast-free track on a slab base for a train with a maximum speed of 320 km / h ( except for the sections Gothenburg – Boros and Jarna – Linköping with a ballast base, designed for a maximum speed of 250 km / h). In order to be within the budgetary framework, the main project also needs to revise the number of stations and their locations.

Trafikverket’s proposals are not worked out in detail and are made to illustrate the cost differences of the options under consideration. For each option, there is a connection of three line branches at the Jönköping node. Placing stations in city centers significantly increases the cost of construction and increases the length of the lines.

However, local authorities believe that the passage of the railroad through the cities contributes to economic growth in the regions. At the same time, when the stations are moved out of settlements, the travel time can be reduced.
