US:Construction Begins on $2.1bn Foothill Gold Line Light Rail Project

The move follows the signing of a design-build contract by Kiewit-Parsons, a joint venture between Kiewit Infrastructure West and Parsons, for the next phase of the Foothill Gold Line light rail extension,World Construction Network has reported.

The contract has been awarded by the Foothill Gold Line Construction Authority.

Foothill Gold Line Construction Authority board chair Tim Sandoval said: “Today, as we sign the contract that kicks off major construction for the next Gold Line segment, we are one step closer to improving mobility and the quality of life for hundreds of thousands of residents, workers, students and others as they travel to and from the San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys each day.”

The contract includes $805.6m (£666m) base scope for the first nine miles of the project from Glendora to Pomona.

For the first nine-mile segment, Kiewit-Parsons will be responsible for the relocation of the existing freight track, installation of the light rail track system, construction of four new light rail stations in Glendora, San Dimas, La Verne and Pomona, and improvements at 40 grade crossings, among others.

The Glendora to Pomona segment of the project is scheduled for completion in 2025, while the entire project to Montclair is planned to be completed by 2028 if the contract option is initiated.

Kiewit Infrastructure West senior vice president Terry Robinson said: “Our long, successful history with the Foothill Gold Line Construction Authority since the late 1990s will only help the Kiewit-Parsons team as we closely collaborate throughout the life of the contract.

“We look forward to using our extensive rail transportation experience to safely deliver a high-quality project that commuters and those visiting the area will ultimately use and enjoy.”

Upon completion, the project will extend the Metro Gold Line light rail line from its eastern terminus in Azusa through the San Gabriel Valley and into San Bernardino County.

The project is expected to create about 16,000 jobs during the construction phase and up to $2.6bn in economic output for the region.
