Security Drones to Protect Estonian Railway Network

Eesti Raudtee and the Estonian company USS Security tested the use of security drones on the Estonian railway network.

At the first stage, the technology will be used to protect the Kopli-Tovarnaya station, and from the spring of this year it will begin to spread to other infrastructure facilities.

According to Marius Kupper, head of security at Eesti Raudtee, the security of the company has improved significantly over the years, which also shows a decrease in the number of cases requiring intervention by security companies. But the problem of Eesti Raudtee is that the real estate and other property of the company are located at different points throughout Estonia.

“Our security partner is USS Security, in which we are testing different solutions. One of them, of course, is drones, which allow us to more conveniently get an overview of what is happening on our territory, and also provide an opportunity to respond much faster if necessary, ”he said.

Marius Kupper said that the technology had already been tested and started trial operation at the Copley Commodity station, and from the spring of this year it will begin to spread to other infrastructure facilities.

“In the future, the use of drones on the railway network can prevent all cases of attacks on our assets,” he stressed.

According to Marco Haruoya, director of internal control at USS Security, five employees have trained the basics of working with drones at the moment.

“The courses talk about control, introduce various drones and make their first flights with them. Further in the plans to train security guards already at the facilities, to teach them to independently manage drones and to make rounds. I suppose that guards could start doing independent rounds with drones already in March. It all depends on the weather, ”he said.

Marco Haruoya added that in order to partially replace the detours of security teams at the station with drones, drones are equipped with special GPS codes. At certain times, guard flights are performed.

“USS Security is the first security company in Estonia to offer such a solution for patrolling. Now bypassing the guard takes almost 40-50 minutes, and with a drone it can be done in 10 minutes. The gain in time is priceless, ”he concluded.(Gudok.ru)
