At the same time, 16% of the electricity used by Russian Railways currently comes from environmentally friendly sources.
The long-term development program of the company until 2025 provides for an increase in cargo turnover by 46.4% compared to 1990.

Halil Amin, winner of the Global Energy International Prize 2019, spoke about modern research in the field of increasing capacity, extending the service life and increasing the fire safety of lithium-ion batteries. According to him, there are technologies such as, for example, lithium-oxygen batteries – they are able to increase the battery capacity from the current 100 watts to 1 kW per kilogram. However, these technologies still require serious basic research.
Igor Landgraf, chief designer of the Federal State Unitary Enterprise “Krylov State Scientific Center”, spoke about the company’s existing technologies for the production of hydrogen elements and power plants, as well as equipment for producing hydrogen fuel. He reported on the hydrogen generation projects implemented by the enterprise and the possibilities of its use both for traction and for providing electricity in places where other energy sources may be difficult to access.
Konstantin Ivanov, Deputy Head of the Traction Rolling Stock Department of JSC VNIIZhT, presented the projects of the hybrid main and shunting locomotives with batteries developed by the Institute. He noted that the most developed project is a contact-battery shunting electric locomotive for use at large passenger hubs.
The power of such a locomotive should be from 500 kW when powered from the network to 300 kW when powered by batteries, which is enough to work with passenger trains of 22 cars.
