ÖBB’s existing night train fleet were converted into multifunctional couchette cars. The newly designed four-seater compartments with fitted beds are intended to increase travel comfort, especially for families – for example with parking spaces for prams. Bicycles can also be taken along and there should be free WiFi and charging options using a USB socket at every lounger. There is a particularly large compartment for people with restricted mobility.
Night train “strong symbol of borderless Europe”
“By 2026 we want to have doubled the number of Nightjet travelers to three million a year,” said Sabine Stock, board member of ÖBB-Personenverkehr. It is not only important to include new destinations in the Europe-wide night train network, but also to offer modern and comfortable night trains.
“The night train is not only a strong symbol for climate-friendly travel, but also for a networked, borderless Europe,” said Stefanie Berk, Head of Marketing at DB-Fernverkehr. The night train to Vienna runs daily and takes almost 13 hours.
More connections will follow
In the coming years, Deutsche Bahn wants to connect 13 European metropolises overnight with other partner railways. In addition to the connections to and from Hamburg, the modernized ÖBB couchette cars will also be used on the Zurich-Berlin, Zurich-Hamburg, Innsbruck-Munich-Cologne-Amsterdam and Vienna-Cologne-Amsterdam routes
