The rebuilt tracks to the ports of Szczecin and Świnoujście increase the efficiency of railways and the ability to handle sea shipping. PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe SA is completing a project worth approximately PLN 1.5 billion – co-financed by the EU’s CEF Connecting Europe Facility. The organization of works ensures constant access of trains to the quays.
The reloading capacity of the stations in Świnoujście and Szczecin will increase. The investment of Polish Railways will ensure the running of longer and heavier trains. There will be 750-meter-long trains with a load of 221 kN per axle. This will enable the handling of a greater number of freight wagons, including in containers. Freight warehouses will be handled faster and more efficiently. The time of reloading in ports will be shortened from several to even several dozen minutes.

Most of the works were completed at the Szczecin Central Port station . The construction of new track systems with turnouts has been completed. Modernized engineering facilities ensure efficient and safe transport of goods to and from the port. Works related to track-related works, profiling and strengthening of embankments, construction of squares and internal access roads, suspension of the traction network are progressing.
The construction of a new Central Control Room is in its final stage, to which, as part of the centralization of rail traffic control, control from five control districts will be transferred.
The Maintenance and Diagnostics Center will be located in the building of the new Central Control Room.
The centralization of rail traffic control will improve the functionality of the station, increase the capacity of the rail infrastructure and the safety of rail traffic.
Most of the work was done at the Świnoujście station . The construction of new track systems with turnouts was completed and one engineering structure (culvert) was rebuilt. Works related to track-related works, profiling and strengthening of embankments, construction of squares and internal access roads are progressing. In the area of the Port of Świnoujście, a second track has been built between Świnoujście Przytór and Świnoujście stations. As a result, the capacity has increased – more trains can travel, which ensures a better transport offer.
As in Szczecin, the construction of the Central Control Center is in the final stage, to which, as part of the centralization of rail traffic control, control will be transferred from three control zones, which will improve the functionality of the station, increase the capacity of the railway infrastructure and increase the safety of railway traffic.
– Work on the access tracks to the ports of Szczecin and Świnoujście is an important and strategic project co-financed by CEF in the amount of almost EUR 120 million. Thanks to the investment, rail access to ports will be improved, which means that more goods will be transported to and from ports by green transport, such as rail. It is also an important undertaking for the development of intermodal transport, which contributes to the implementation of the European Green Deal – says Morten Jensen, Head of Unit at CINEA.
The investment “Improving rail access to seaports in Szczecin and Świnoujście”, worth about PLN 1.5 billion, is co-financed by the EU financial instrument CEF – “Connecting Europe”. The co-financing value is PLN 510 million. The works are scheduled to be completed in the second half of 2022.
