African railway stakeholders recently convened in Midrand, South Africa, to review the status of implementation of the 13 Africa Integrated High Speed Railway Network (AIHSRN) pilot projects, where they exchanged ideas on best practices and key challenges in the implementation of the priority continental railway projects.
The continental workshop, which was organized by the African Union’s Department of Infrastructure and Energy in partnership with the African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD), the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) called for the ratification of the Luxembourg Protocol on Rolling Stock as a strategy to support African states in addressing the main challenge of securing the necessary capital expenditure to implement railway projects.
Among others, the workshop also called on Regional Economic Communities (RECs), Corridor Management Institutions (CMI) and railway associations to engage their AIHSRN footprint Member States to determine their national readiness plans to implement their respective AIHRSN pilot projects as well as integrate the roadmap for the continental rail market into their respective infrastructure development strategies and plans.
