A year ahead of schedule, the Dutch railway company NS announced that its entire electric train fleet is running on wind power from January 1, 2017, ushering in a new era in green transportation.

One of the largest railway companies in the Netherlands, known as NS, partnered with energy company Eneco in 2015 to supply renewable energy to its fleet of electric trains, which carry 600,000 people a day.
NS electric trains use about 1.2 billion kWh of electricity per year, which is roughly the equivalent of all the homes in the city of Amsterdam.
Trains in the Netherlands carry 1.2 million passengers every day, transport is responsible for 20% of CO2 emissions in the Netherlands.
Switching this transport to a renewable source will significantly improve the Netherlands’ carbon footprint, which had already improved thanks to investments in renewable energy projects.
The electricity used to power the Dutch trains comes from wind farms in the Netherlands, Belgium and Finland, many of which were recently built for this purpose.
