In high demand for general public travel needs, the train continues to attract significant traffic in Morocco.
However, the rail network does not cover the whole country, which motivates the extension projects for which the executive is looking for donors.
In Morocco, 12.4 million people traveled by train during the first quarter of 2023, an increase of 28% year-on-year, according to statistics from the National Railways Office (ONCF).
Al Boraq, the high-speed network linking Tangier to Casablanca, achieved a record of over 1 million passengers.
Rail freight posted a volume of 2.1 million tonnes transported, an increase of 3% compared to the first 3 months of 2022.
The ONCF translates this in particular by the adoption of the train as “preferred mode of transport for operators economical for freight shipments”.
The overall performance enabled ONCF to achieve a total turnover of 903 million dirhams, a value up 6% compared to 2022.
The train is one of the main means of transport in Morocco and attracts traffic of up to 46 million passengers per year (2022 statistics).
