… Says region must plan for increasing population
Osun State Government has expressed its readiness to fully support the proposed Southwest Rail Project being championed by the Development Agenda of Western Nigeria(DAWN Commission).
Commissioner for Transportation, Hon. Sesan Oyedele said this at a meeting of transport stakeholders with the Commissioners for Transportation throughout the South-West region which was held in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
He said that Osun State is ready to offer efficient transportation solutions with a view to alleviating challenges of the sector in the State and the entire South-West region.
The Commissioner added that the State is prepared to work with other South-West States to put together a step by step road map that will improve rail transportation in the region.
Hon. Oyedele while speaking further stressed on the need to increasingly cater for the increasing population of the region in terms of meeting the transport needs of the people.
According to him, “Nigeria’s railway system over the years has played a significant role in the country’s transport sector and economic development spanning across different regions of the country.
“We need to suatain this by fast tracking development of the transport sector, the population of the country is growing rapidly, Nigeria is going to have close to an extra 100m people in about 10 years time.
“Realising this vision needs a collective approach and a methodological planning, we need to get our acts together and put together a railway development plan that will cater for the needs of our people in future”. The Commissioner stated.
